Osteopath When consulting an Osteopath the patient is guaranteed of the same safety standards as when they visit a dentist or doctor. Osteopathy was the first complementary medicine to be regulated by law and in fact is now recognised by the BMA as "a discreet clinical discipline". Osteopathy is a specialised branch of medicine which lays chief emphasis on treating the structural integrity of the body primarily by manual methods. In addition it uses many other diagnostic procedures involved in conventional medical assessment and diagnosis. Many patients attend our clinics because of musculoskeletal pain this can be due to problems with their tendons, muscles, ligaments, or joints. We offer a ten minute free musculoskeletal check for patients that wish to discover the benefits of osteopathy and to establish the cause of their problem, not just the presenting symptom only. In addition to osteopathy we also use dry needling (acupuncture) this is a particularly effective treatment for trapped nerves, stress and inflammatory conditions such as osteoarthritis. After the extensive medical questionnaire, consent forms and practice information, the patient is assessed medically and osteopathically, once it has been established that the condition can be treated we can use a wide range of different manipulative skills. The most famous is the thrust technique but for more nervous or anxious patients we can use many different methods of mobilising the joints in a gentle way. Communication is greatly encouraged at the practice as we find most people want to know specifically what their condition is and how this can be helped with aftercare advice which we are happy to give. We have a quality assurance system which means that if no major improvement is felt within three visits then we always discharge the patient to the most suitable practitioner i.e. first of all the G.P. then on to a further specialist. In this way there is always an outcome of treatment. Sometimes patients present with conditions that have existed for many years or indeed quite severe arthritic conditions, in these instances we suggest a total of five visits. Many patients choose to take advantage of maintenance programmes, perhaps for osteoarthritis of the knee or stubborn lower back pain, resulting in a "prevention better than cure" system. On your first consultation we will give you a diagnosis and illustrate approximately how many treatments it will take and provide a suitable plan of manipulative care for your own individual problem taking into account age, arthritic conditions. If we can't help you we will tell you immediately. The Which report in 1986 showed a "90% satisfaction rate for patients visiting osteopaths", we have a practice comments book for anyone to look at. For companies we can provide statistics of outcomes of treatment. Contact
